Mathematical Palette: The Origin of the Name

I started the Mathematical Palette five months ago, but I have never mentioned the origin of the name in the blog introduction.

The Mathematical Palette is a book written by Ronald Staszkow and Robert Bradshaw of Ohlone College. I bought it in a book sale three years ago, but I have not finished reading it until now.

The book is intended for liberal arts majors, and is “readable” even by students who have completed intermediate algebra. It discusses history of mathematics, work of mathematicians, and various applications of mathematics in real-life. Many topics (e.g. fractals and perspective drawing) are linked to the arts.

I think the book is a good supplement reading material even for high school students.

Now, I am thinking a tag line for this blog that will connect mathematics, palette, and painting. As of now, I have “Because everything is painted with numbers.” If anyone can think of a better tag line, I would be most thankful.

Stephen? Any suggestion?

Note: The link above points to an edition of the book which is not the same as mine. The one I bought is the second edition.

Te palette can also refer to a taste. So what the book may also be providing its readers is a taste of mathematics, it's history and connections across the sciences.
